Project BANNA: Empowering Channapatna's Artisans for a Brighter Future

Project BANNA, a transformative initiative aimed at revitalizing the traditional craft of Channapatna's renowned wooden toys. Nestled in the heart of India's Ramanagara District, Channapatna has long been celebrated for its exquisite craftsmanship, where skilled artisans bring to life beautiful wooden toys using age-old techniques and vibrant vegetable dyes. However, the very essence of this treasured art form is now at risk, threatened by modern challenges that endanger the livelihoods of the town's dedicated artisans.

About the project

Our Mission:

Channapatna's artisan community has faced numerous challenges in recent times, including dwindling demand for traditional toys, competition from mass-produced Chinese alternatives, escalating raw material costs, and high middlemen commissions. Project BANNA was born out of a commitment to uplift these artisans and their families, ensuring their invaluable skills continue to thrive for generations to come.

1. Economic Empowerment:

We are dedicated to improving the economic conditions of Channapatna's toymakers. By offering innovative solutions and market-driven strategies, Project BANNA seeks to enhance their livelihoods and financial well-being.

2. Diversification of Product Offerings:

We recognize the importance of expanding the artisans' repertoire to stay relevant in evolving markets. Through Project BANNA, we aim to help artisans diversify their creations, producing a mix of specialized and high-value products that capture the attention of customers worldwide.

3. Collaborative Workshops:

Our initiative will establish quarterly workshops that bring together local master artisans and faculty and students from India's top design schools. This collaborative effort will explore the fusion of traditional craftsmanship with contemporary elements, such as electronics and urban lifestyle themes, leading to the creation of a new generation of Channapatna toys.

4. Skill Enhancement and Market Access:

Project BANNA is committed to providing artisans with access to new skills and markets. By facilitating interactions with design experts and opening doors to global platforms, we aim to expand their horizons and connect them with a diverse audience.

5. Artisans Produce Organisation:

To further support artisans, we will assist in setting up an Artisans Produce Organisation. This entity will provide crucial market linkages, including establishing a robust online presence and access to global markets, ensuring the artisans' exquisite creations reach customers around the world.
